How to tape for neck osteoarthritis stability

Do you experience neck pain caused by osteoarthritis, stiff muscles, headaches, or difficulty moving your neck? This taping method can provide support and relief.

Osteoarthritis in the neck is fairly common, as the cartilage between the cervical vertebrae gradually deteriorates. This can cause pain during movement and lead to stiff muscles in the neck. Headaches are another well-known symptom of osteoarthritis. You have probably already consulted a therapist for this condition, and it is possible that this taping method has been used as part of your treatment. On this page, we show you how you can also apply the tape yourself at home. Since it involves the neck, it is advisable to ask someone for help when putting the tape on.

Self-taping your neck for stability with cervical osteoarthritis

Tips to make your neck taping treatment safe and effective:

Is the cause of the pain or discomfort clear?
Read the instructions carefully before you begin taping.
Select the tape colour you prefer.
Do not apply any stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
Rub the tape well to activate the adhesive.
Check for any contraindications before applying tape.
On average, the tape will stay in place for three to five days.
You can shower while wearing the tape.
Removing the tape is easier with a little oil.

Preparation for taping a stiff neck

Tape

Form: Y-strips and I-strip
Number of strips: 1 strip of approximately 25 cm, cut about 20 cm down the middle to create a Y-shape, and 1 I-strip of about 20–25 cm
Technique: muscle technique with the neck bent, anchors applied without stretch

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

Cut one strip of tape, about 25 cm long, into a Y-shape with a 5 cm base, and cut one I-strip of about 20–25 cm. Round off all ends to improve adhesion. Choose the tape colour you prefer. The colour shown here is only an example.

Applying CureTape for stability in neck complaints caused by osteoarthritis

Step

Sit with your neck slightly bent, chin towards your chest.
Tear the release paper at the split of the two strips and remove the backing from the base.
Apply the anchor at the upper thoracic vertebrae.
Apply the right strip without stretch while tilting your head down to the left.
Repeat on the other side, tilting your head down to the right.
Tear the release paper of the I-strip in the middle and fold the paper ends outward.
With your chin still towards your chest, apply the I-strip from the centre with light stretch, then place both ends without stretch.
Rub the tape firmly to ensure better adhesion.

Advice from Christina on taping the neck for stability

For these self-taping instructions, I have selected applications that are straightforward to carry out on your own. With neck taping, however, it is usually best to have someone assist you. To ensure the treatment is performed safely, I provide practical tips to keep in mind before, during, and after taping. These are based on my many years of professional experience. If your symptoms persist, always consult a therapist or your GP.
