How to tape scars and bruises

Would you like to know how to tape scars and bruises yourself in a simple way? In this article, we’ll guide you step by step through the process.

Scars are often seen as unsightly, but they can also cause pain or stick to surrounding tissue, restricting movement. The best results are achieved when treatment starts as early as possible, provided the wound has completely healed. Older scars can also benefit from this method. By lifting the skin and underlying tissue, the tape helps the area move more freely with every motion, making the tissue softer and more flexible.

Important!: Never apply tape directly over an open wound.

This same technique can also be used for bruises (haematomas). After a knock or fall, a bruise often appears quickly and can remain sore for several days. Applying tape can relieve discomfort and speed up recovery. The pressure differences created by the tape promote blood circulation, helping the bruise to heal more quickly.

Tips to ensure a scar or bruise taping treatment goes smoothly:

  • Is the cause of the pain or complaint clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before you begin taping.
  • Select the tape colour you prefer.
  • Do not apply stretch at the start or end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to ensure proper adhesion.
  • Check whether there are any reasons why taping should be avoided.
  • On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier if you use a little oil.

Shape: customised I-strip
Number of strips: depending on the size of the scar or bruise
Method: ligament technique (maximum stretch)

Measuring and cutting the tape

1

  • Measure the tape according to the length of the scar or the size of the bruise.
  • Cut the 5 cm wide tape three times lengthwise to create four equal, narrow strips.

  • Tear the backing paper in the middle, fold it to the right and left, and stretch the centre part of the tape to its maximum.
  • Place the tape at a 45-degree angle to the direction of the scar or the area being treated.
  • Carefully apply the two anchors without stretch and smooth the tape down.
  • At intervals of about 1 cm, repeat the process with the other strips until the entire scar or bruise is covered.
  • Add additional strips at a 45-degree angle in the opposite direction, this time with full stretch, so that they cross exactly in the middle of the scar or bruise.
  • Apply as many strips as needed until the whole area is covered. Rub the tapes firmly to ensure good adhesion.
