How to tape a bunion (hallux valgus)

Do you want to know how to easily tape a hallux valgus (bunion) yourself? In this article we’ll guide you step by step through the process.

Hallux valgus, also known as a bunion, is a deformity where the big toe gradually shifts inward. It is the most common foot misalignment. The first metatarsal bone moves outward, which makes the foot wider. Causes include poorly fitting shoes, genetic predisposition, long periods of standing, or in most cases, having flat feet (splayfoot). Over time this leads to a visible deviation of the big toe. The taping technique described here will not correct the misalignment, but it can help reduce discomfort such as redness, pressure, and pain around the joint. If the pain persists or starts affecting the other toes, it is important to consult a specialist. Supportive measures such as proper footwear, insoles, night splints, and specific foot or toe exercises can also help ease the discomfort.

Self-taping for hallux valgus

Tips for a successful hallux valgus taping treatment:

  • Is the cause of your complaint or pain clear?
  • Read the taping instructions carefully before you start.
  • Pick the tape color you prefer.
  • Do not stretch the tape at the beginning or end.
  • Rub the tape firmly to activate the adhesive.
  • Check if there are any reasons why taping may not be suitable for you.
  • On average, the tape lasts 3–7 days on the skin.
  • It is fine to shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier with a bit of oil.

Preparation for taping a hallux valgus

Tape

Shape: Two customised Y-tapes.
Number of strips: 2.
Technique: Correction technique (relaxing tape applied with strong tension).

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

1

  • Sit on a stool and place your lower leg across the other leg so you can easily reach the foot that needs taping.
  • Measure the required length for the first tape from the outside of the big toe to the heel. Cut the tape about 5 cm at one end.
  • For the second tape, measure from the ball of the big toe across the top of the foot up to just before the outside of the ankle. Cut into the tape until the last 5 cm.

  • Carefully place the strips of the first tape (the base) around the big toe, making sure no wrinkles form.
  • Pull the tape firmly toward the heel, following the inside of the foot, and rub it down well.
  • Place the base of the second tape under the ball of the foot.
  • The first strip runs along the toe line on top of the foot with light stretch.
  • The second strip runs across the top of the foot and ends just before the outside of the ankle.
  • Finally, rub the tapes down firmly to secure them.
