How to tape a painful thumb

“Smartphone thumb” (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) often develops from overuse of the wrist. Swelling of the tendon sheath can cause narrowing in the first extensor compartment, leading to pain in the thumb joint that may radiate into the forearm. This discomfort usually appears during activity or when the thumb is spread apart. Taping can provide support by reducing strain on the tendon and easing thumb movements. If symptoms persist, you should always consult a doctor or physiotherapist. Taping may also help relieve general overuse injuries of the thumb joint or pain caused by thumb arthritis.

Self-taping a painful thumb

Tips for a safe and effective thumb taping treatment:

Has the cause of the pain or complaint been identified?
Read the instructions carefully before starting to tape.
Select the tape colour you prefer.
Do not apply stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
Rub the tape firmly after application to improve adhesion.
Check whether there are any contraindications before taping.
On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
You can shower while wearing the tape.
Removing the tape is easier when using a little oil.

Preparing to tape a painful thumb

Tape

Technique: muscle technique (light stretch)

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

Sit at a table and measure two strips of tape from the thumb to the middle of the forearm.
Cut one end of each strip to create a Y-shape that will fit around the thumb.

Applying the tape to the thumb

Step

Begin by placing both Y-strips with the split ends wrapped lightly around the thumb, applying a small stretch, and press them down firmly.
Once the base is secured, spread the thumb slightly and apply the tape with light tension across the base of the thumb and over the wrist, following the line of the thumb.
Rub the tape to ensure it adheres properly.
Repeat the same technique with the second strip, this time placing it diagonally across the first, running over the back of the hand and onto the forearm.
