How to tape for menstrual pain

Would you like to learn how to tape effectively to ease menstrual pain? In this article, we’ll explain step by step how you can do it yourself.

Many women experience a range of symptoms before or during their period, such as abdominal cramps, headaches, backache, circulation issues or general fatigue. To shed the uterine lining, the muscles of the womb contract, which restricts blood flow in the tissue and reduces oxygen supply, causing pain. The taping method described here has already helped many women find relief. Ideally, the tape should be applied before the first cramps appear, but it can also be applied later to the abdomen and lower back.

Self-taping for menstrual complaints

Tips to ensure a menstrual taping treatment is carried out effectively:

  • Is the cause of the complaint or pain clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before you start taping.
  • Choose the tape colour you prefer.
  • Do not apply any stretch at the beginning or end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to ensure it sticks properly.
  • Check whether there are any reasons why taping should be avoided.
  • On average, the tape stays in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier if you use a little oil.

Preparation before taping for menstrual pain

Tape

Shape: 3 customised I-strips
Number of strips: 3
Method: muscle technique (light tension) + ligament technique (maximum stretch)

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

1

  • Stand in front of a mirror to make it easier to apply the tape. Measure the length of the first strip from one pelvic bone to the other.
  • For the second strip, measure from the navel down to the top of the pubic bone.
  • Cut a third strip approximately 15 cm long.

  • Take the first strip, tear the backing paper in the middle and fold it away to both sides.
  • Apply the centre with minimal tension and place the tape horizontally between the two pelvic bones, leaving the ends without stretch.
  • Rub the tape firmly to ensure adhesion.
  • Prepare the second strip in the same way and place the centre section with minimal tension vertically along the line between the navel and the top of the pubic bone.
  • Rub the tape well to secure it.
  • The third strip is applied to the back. First, find the correct spot (you may want to mark it). Place your hands on the pelvis with your fingertips pointing forward and your thumbs pointing backwards. The tips of your thumbs now indicate the area where the tape should be placed.
  • Sit with your back facing a mirror, lean slightly forward and tear the backing paper in the middle.
  • Apply the centre of the tape under tension and secure it. Place the two anchors without stretch and rub the tape down firmly.
