How to tape for pain under the kneecap

Want to learn how to tape your kneecap yourself? This guide walks you through the process in a clear and practical way.

Pain beneath the kneecap often stems from a mix of factors such as muscle imbalance, reduced activity or simply placing too much strain on the knee during daily movements. When the muscles that control bending and straightening the knee are not working in harmony, extra pressure builds up on the patella. If you regularly experience discomfort after sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, walking downhill or rising from a deep squat, this taping method may offer welcome relief.

The technique described below helps guide the patella’s natural movement and can improve the knee’s overall freedom of motion. Two separate tape applications are used to add stability where it is needed most. For lasting improvement, it is important to combine this method with exercises that strengthen the muscles around the thigh, particularly the quadriceps.

Self-taping for pain beneath the kneecap

Helpful tips for a successful kneecap taping treatment:

  • First, make sure you know what’s causing your knee pain or discomfort.
  • Go through the taping steps carefully before you start.
  • Select the tape color you prefer.
  • Avoid stretching the tape at both the beginning and the end when applying.
  • Rub the tape well to activate the adhesive and improve hold.
  • Check whether there are any reasons why taping might not be appropriate for you.
  • On average, tape can stay in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can safely shower with the tape on.
  • Removing the tape is easier if you use a little bit of oil.

Preparation before taping the kneecap

Tape
Shape: One custom Y-strip with an extended base.
Number of strips: 2.
Technique: Muscle technique (apply with a light, gentle stretch).

Measuring and Cutting the Tape

Step

1

  • Sit on a stool with your knee bent and measure a strip of tape from the middle of your thigh down to just below the kneecap. Cut two pieces of that length and then split each one lengthwise so you end up with Y-shaped tapes, with a single base and two long tails.

Applying the first tape:

  • If possible, keep your knee bent at a 90-degree angle during the application.
  • Carefully tear the backing paper where the two strips separate. Position the base of the tape on the thigh, just above the kneecap.
  • Once the base is secured, guide the two tails along both sides of the kneecap with a light stretch. Smooth the tape firmly into place.

Applying the second tape:

  • Place the base of the tape without any stretch about one hand’s width below the kneecap. Apply the two strips in the same way as the first, wrapping lightly around the kneecap and ending with the base along the side of the thigh.
  • Make sure the anchors of this second tape do not overlap the first base but stick directly onto the skin. This helps the application hold more securely.
