How to tape your elbow for stability

Have you suffered a fall that left your elbow dislocated? This taping method may support your recovery and provide your elbow with a greater sense of stability.

Even while healing after such an injury, it is common to experience lingering pain or a feeling of looseness in the joint. On this page, you’ll find guidance on a taping application designed to help support your elbow throughout the recovery process.

Supporting elbow stability after a fall

Tips for a safe and effective taping treatment:

Has the cause of the pain or discomfort been clearly identified?
Always read the instructions carefully before starting to tape.
Select the tape colour you prefer.
Do not apply any stretch at the beginning or end of the tape.
Rub the tape firmly after application to ensure proper adhesion.
Check for any contraindications before taping.
On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
It is possible to shower while wearing the tape.
Removing the tape is easier when using a little oil.

Preparing to tape the elbow

Shape: I-strips, approximately 3 cm wide and 12 cm long
Number of strips: 2
Technique: Ligament technique

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

From the roll, cut two strips of tape, each approximately 3 cm wide and 12 cm long.

Apply tape to both the inner and outer side of the elbow for stability

Applying the tape to the outer side of the elbow:

Step

Tear the backing paper in the centre and fold it back towards the ends.
Keep the elbow slightly bent and apply around 50% stretch to the middle section of the tape.
Place the stretched centre across the outside of the elbow, then lay down the ends without any stretch.
Rub the tape firmly to ensure secure adhesion.

Applying the tape to the inner side of the elbow:

Step

Tear the backing paper in the middle and fold it back towards the ends.
Keep the elbow slightly bent and apply roughly 50% stretch to the central part of the tape.
Position the stretched middle section on the inner side of the elbow, placing the ends down without any stretch.
Rub the tape thoroughly to ensure it adheres securely.

Christina’s advice on taping the elbow for stability

For these self-taping instructions, I have selected applications that are relatively easy to carry out on your own. However, when taping the elbow it is often helpful to have assistance from another person. To ensure the treatment is safe, I provide some practical guidance to keep in mind before, during and after taping. These recommendations are based on my many years of professional practice. For a quicker recovery, combine taping with specific exercises. If your symptoms continue, always consult a physiotherapist or your GP.
