How to tape for golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)

Would you like to learn how to tape for golfer’s elbow yourself? In this article, we’ll guide you step by step through the process.

When suffering from golfer’s elbow, the pain is usually felt on the inner side of the elbow, around the bony prominence where the forearm flexor tendons attach. This irritation of the tendon insertion is caused by overuse of the flexor muscles. Tightening or contracting the muscles in the forearm and fingers can be painful. Many people also notice a pressing or aching discomfort on the inside of the elbow, for example when lifting a chair with the backs of the hands facing downwards. The taping method described here can help to relieve strain on the irritated tendon attachments and reduce tension in the overworked muscles.

Self-taping for golfer’s elbow

Tips for a successful golfer’s elbow taping treatment:

  • Has the cause of the complaint or pain been clearly identified?
  • Read through the instructions carefully before you start taping.
  • Select the tape colour of your choice.
  • Avoid applying stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape firmly after application to improve adhesion.
  • Check whether there are any contraindications before taping.
  • On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier when using a little oil.

  • Sit at a table and measure the first strip from the back of the hand up to just above the inner side of the elbow, keeping the arm extended and making a fist.
  • To prepare the tape for application, fold one end in half and cut two small holes at the fold.
  • For the second strip, measure from the elbow to the midpoint of the inner forearm.

  • Gently tear the first strip at the two holes, slide the middle and ring fingers through, and place the anchor on the back of the hand without stretch, keeping the wrist relaxed.
  • Once the base is secured, rotate the arm 180 degrees, extend the forearm and apply the tape with light tension along the inside of the forearm up to elbow level. Note: do not let the tape finish directly in the crease of the elbow – end slightly to the side instead.
  • Rub the tape firmly to ensure good adhesion.
  • Place the anchor of the second strip without stretch on the inner side of the forearm at elbow height.
  • Apply the strip in one smooth motion: slowly rotate the arm inward while bending it at the same time. During this movement, lay the tape carefully along the forearm with light stretch.
  • Make sure the tape lies flat without creating skin folds, then rub it well to activate the adhesive.
