How to tape for elbow bursitis

Do you have an inflamed bursa at the tip of your elbow? This condition is often referred to as “student’s elbow”. It is an injury you can support yourself with tape. Below you’ll find a taping method that may help.

If you notice a painful swelling at the end of the elbow, it is most likely bursitis. Also known as student’s elbow, this problem is caused by inflammation of the bursa over the olecranon. It often develops after repeated knocks or from leaning on the elbow for long periods. On this page, we explain how kinesiology tape can be applied to support recovery.

Self-taping for an inflamed elbow

Tips for a safe and effective taping treatment:

  • Has the cause of the pain or discomfort been clearly identified?
  • Read through the instructions carefully before you begin taping.
  • Select the tape colour you prefer.
  • Do not apply stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well after application to activate the adhesive.
  • Check for any contraindications before taping.
  • On average, the tape will remain in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier when using a little oil.

Christina’s advice on taping your elbow

For these self-taping instructions, I have selected applications that are simple enough to carry out on your own. When taping the elbow, however, it is often advisable to have someone assist you. To keep the treatment safe, I share practical guidance to follow before, during and after taping. These tips are drawn from my many years of clinical experience. For quicker recovery, combine taping with stretching and mobility exercises. If your complaints persist, always consult a physiotherapist or your GP.
