How to tape your sacroiliac joint (SI joint)

If you are experiencing lower back pain that radiates into the buttocks, pelvis or groin, the sacroiliac joint (SI joint) could be the cause. This taping method may provide relief.

Are you wondering which type of tape can support back pain linked to the SI joint? This joint is a firm connection between the spine and the pelvis. When it becomes overloaded, it can lead to discomfort in the lower back with pain spreading to the buttocks, pelvis and groin.

On this page, we demonstrate how you can apply this taping technique yourself. Since it involves the back, it is advisable to ask someone to help you with the application.

Self-taping the SI joint

Tips to ensure your SI joint taping treatment is effective:

  • Is the cause of the discomfort or pain clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before starting the taping process.
  • Select the tape colour you prefer.
  • Avoid applying stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to ensure proper adhesion.
  • Check for any contraindications before applying tape.
  • On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–5 days.
  • It is possible to shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier with a little oil.

Preparation for taping the SI joint

Form: I-strips
Number of strips: 3 strips of approximately 10, 15 and 20 cm
Technique: ligament technique with around 50% stretch in the middle section, anchors applied without stretch

Measuring and cutting the tape

Step

1

  • Cut three strips of tape, measuring approximately 10, 15 and 20 cm, and round off the ends to improve adhesion. In this example, two different colours are used to make the order of application clearer. Choose the tape colour you feel most comfortable with.

  • Apply the first strip of 10 cm with about 50% stretch at the point where the buttock crease begins. Fix the ends without stretch and rub down well.
  • Apply the second strip of about 15 cm, overlapping the first strip by one third, with 50% stretch and the ends without stretch. Rub firmly.
  • Apply the final strip of about 20 cm in the same way, overlapping the second strip by one third, with 50% stretch and the ends without stretch. Rub down thoroughly.
  • Rub the entire tape application well to ensure better adhesion.

If your symptoms continue, always consult a therapist or your GP.
