There are several types of elbow injuries that can vary in severity depending on the nature of the condition.

Below, you will find an overview of the most common elbow injuries along with information on how they can occur.

  1. Tennis elbow: Also known as lateral epicondylitis, this condition causes pain on the outer side of the elbow. It results from overuse and strain of the tendons and muscles attached to the outer part of the elbow. The main causes are repetitive movements and excessive load on the forearm, such as during sports, typing, painting or lifting. These activities place stress on the tendons, leading to microscopic damage and inflammation.
  2. Golfer’s elbow: Also referred to as medial epicondylitis, this condition causes pain on the inner side of the elbow. It develops due to overuse of the tendons and muscles on the inside of the elbow. Similar to tennis elbow, it is often the result of repetitive strain or overloading of the forearm.
  3. Student’s elbow: Inflammation can occur at the tip of the elbow, known as bursitis. This condition is commonly called student’s elbow because it often affects people who spend long periods leaning on their elbows, such as while studying. Continuous pressure on the area can lead to irritation and inflammation.
  4. Dislocated elbow: When trying to break a fall with your hands, the elbow can become dislocated. In some cases, hypermobility can also cause a feeling of instability in the elbow joint.

On this page, you can find information on how to tape your elbow yourself in case of pain or injury, such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome.
