How to tape for facial pain

Would you like to know how to tape for facial pain in an easy and effective way? In this article, we’ll guide you step by step through the process.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a type of facial pain caused by irritation of the three branches of the trigeminal nerve. The nerve starts above the ear and extends to the forehead, upper jaw and lower jaw. The condition is characterised by sudden, sharp, stabbing pain. It often occurs on one side of the face, radiating along the three branches towards the chin, cheek, nose or forehead. Sometimes it can even feel like toothache. The pain attacks usually last only a few seconds but can repeat every few minutes. Between attacks, there may be pain-free periods lasting several days. Trigeminal neuralgia must always be assessed by a neurologist. The taping method described here is only an additional way to relieve pressure on the irritated nerve.

Note: since trigeminal neuralgia is linked to hypersensitivity of the nerve, the tape must be removed very carefully. If not, removal itself can irritate the nerve again and trigger pain!

Tips to ensure a facial pain taping treatment goes smoothly:

  • Is the cause of the complaint or pain clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before you begin taping.
  • Choose the tape colour you prefer.
  • Do not apply stretch at the beginning or end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to ensure proper adhesion.
  • Check if there are any reasons why taping should be avoided.
  • On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier with a little oil.

  • Place the base of the third strip without stretch in the middle, over the previously applied bases, and guide it with light tension towards the nostril.
  • Finally, rub the tapes gently to secure them.
