How to tape for a lower back herniated disc

Have you been diagnosed with a herniated disc caused by overstrain and are you looking for a way to relieve pressure on the affected vertebra? This taping method for a lumbar hernia can offer support. In this article, we explain the process step by step with photos and clear instructions. As it involves the back, it is advisable to ask someone to help you apply the tape.

A hernia does not develop overnight. The symptoms usually build up gradually. You have probably already consulted a therapist about this condition and may have received this taping method as part of your treatment plan. On this page, we show you how to continue applying the tape yourself at home. Because the back is involved, assistance during the application is recommended.

Note: in this example, the hernia is in the lower back, but this taping method can be applied to any part of the spine where a hernia has been identified.

Self-taping for hernia-related back pain

Tips to ensure a safe and effective taping treatment for a spinal hernia:

  • Is the cause of the pain or discomfort clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before you begin taping.
  • Choose the tape colour you prefer.
  • Do not apply stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to improve adhesion.
  • Check for any contraindications before taping.
  • On average, the tape will remain in place for 3–5 days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier with a little oil.

Advice from Christina on taping for a hernia

For these self-taping instructions, I have selected applications that are straightforward to apply on your own. With back taping, however, it is often advisable to have someone assist you. To make sure the treatment is carried out safely, I provide practical tips to consider before, during, and after taping. These are based on my many years of professional experience. If your symptoms persist, always consult a therapist or your GP, and keep in touch with a healthcare professional when you have been diagnosed with a hernia.
